The promotion of the physical and mental fitness of students is an important element of College life. All students P-10 participate in a well sequenced Physical Education Program.
This is supplemented by the three College Carnivals:
- Swimming
- Cross Country
- Athletics
All students in Prep to Year 2 participate in Physical Education classes that are appropriate to their age. Prep and Kindergarten children focus on gross motor activities such as throwing, catching, balancing and many more. They also participate in dance activities.
Students in Years 1 and 2 participate in both Physical Education classes and organised Sport. They are taught skills that will help develop fitness as well as participate in team games. They also participate in a swimming program for one term.
The students participate in a weekly sporting program that offers a wide range of activities to suit the needs and ability levels of all students. The program includes a competition which is held between other schools in a number of sports (IPSSO). The students are selected to represent the College based on their skills in a particular sport. The sports played in summer are basketball, cricket, t-ball and softball. The sports played in winter are soccer, oztag, newcombe ball and netball.
Students who do not participate in IPSSO will participate in College sport. A different sport is chosen for each year group per term. All sports are taught by qualified coaches and the cost is covered by the College service fees.
Most programs require an additional payment for travel, venues or specialist coaching while the cost of College Sport is included within the fees.
The College runs three carnivals each year, Swimming, Cross Country and Athletics. The students who perform best at these carnivals then may represent the College at CASA (Co-educational Anglican Schools Association) where they compete against students from seven other schools. If they excel at CASA they may progress to CIS which is the state carnival for all independent schools.
All students in Years 7 to 11 must participate in at least one of the following programs.
They may trial to gain a place in a College team as part of the Tuesday afternoon inter-school competition called MISA. MISA stands for the Macarthur Independent Schools Association. There are four seasons in the year and trials are held at the beginning of each season. All students chosen to represent the College must commit to regular training.
Students not selected for MISA teams and others who choose to do so participate in the Weekly College Sport Program. This is conducted on the College site or on nearby sporting facilities and is supervised by College staff.
Students in Year 12 will have access to parts of each of these three programs. Details will be provided separately.
CASA SPORT (CO-EDUCATIONAL ANGLICAN SCHOOLS ASSOCIATION)
The CASA competition serves two purposes. Firstly, it provides like-minded schools the opportunity to compete regularly in carnivals and gala days in a variety of sports. Secondly, it is through selection in CASA teams that students have the opportunity to achieve higher selection into AICES representative teams and then into CIS and even NSW All Schools teams. Students achieving selection into CASA teams have the opportunity to purchase a shirt and hat. Please note that Thomas Hassall Anglican College does not send teams to all CASA Gala Days. This depends on student interest and the timing of other College activities.
AICES SPORT (ASSOCIATION OF INDEPENDENT CO-EDUCATIONAL SCHOOLS)
Students achieving selection into NASSA teams compete at the AICES Championships. While the AICES championships are tournaments themselves, a team is also selected at the championships to represent AICES at the CIS championships. Students achieving selection into AICES teams have the opportunity to purchase a variety of AICES merchandise. Some sports also incur a $10 hire levy for playing uniforms. This will be notified on selection into an AICES team. The College will cover the cost of the levy.
Note: Some sports are trialed at an AICES level without needing to be selected into a NASSA team to attend the trials. Students will be given the opportunity to nominate to trial for these sports.
For more information about AICES activities visit: www.aices.com.au
CIS SPORT (COMBINED INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS)
Students achieving selection into AICES teams will compete at the CIS Championships/trials. It should be noted that students competing at a CIS level incur a $15 trial levy. This College will cover the cost of the levy.
Note: Some sports are trialed at a CIS level without needing to be selected into an AICES team to attend the trials. Students will be given the opportunity to nominate to trial for these sports. Students should clarify the sports for which this occurs with the Secondary Sports Coordinator.
For more information about CIS activities visit: www.aisnsw.edu.au Students achieving selection into CIS teams will be notified of their commitments and costs at the trial dates.
NSW ALL SCHOOLS
Generally, ‘NSW All Schools’ teams are selected at the NSW All Schools Championships. Some individual sports have separate trial dates. This information can be obtained by searching the relevant sport on the NSW CIS website.
NOMINATION PROCESS FOR TRIALS
Students wishing to nominate themselves for trials at CASA level will need to collect a nomination form from the Secondary Sports Coordinator in the PDHPE Staffroom at least three weeks prior to the trial date.
Nomination due dates for AICES and CIS trials can be found on their websites (see previous page) and are also listed on the sport calendar. Nomination forms can be collected from the PDHPE staffroom. It is the responsibility of the students to ensure their nomination forms are returned to the Secondary Sports Coordinator at least 24 hours before the close of nominations so they can be processed at a school level.
A large number of sports are not age specific and may be open to all ages up to 18 years. As a general rule Thomas Hassall Anglican College does not send students in Year 7 and 8 to open trials. However, parents may discuss this with the Secondary Sports Coordinator.
THOMAS HASSALL REPRESENTATIVE UNIFORMS
Students representing Thomas Hassall Anglican College at MISA and CASA levels in sporting activities may be required to wear a representative uniform. While students are not charged a hire fee for this, unfortunately in the past not all uniforms have been returned. If a representative shirt is not returned, the replacement cost will be billed to the student’s account.
