STUDENT LEADERSHIP

The College is committed to providing leadership opportunities to help students to develop lifelong skills. Student leadership develops a sense of belonging to a community which is an important protective strategy in developing a resilient environment in our College. The College provides a range of leadership opportunities for students to reflect the diversity of the student population. Students in leadership roles are delegated with specific roles and responsibilities.

Junior School Prefects represent the Junior School at a variety of events throughout the year. The size of the prefect team is determined by the Head of Junior School.

Senior School Leadership Team comprises of two College Captains (male and female), two Vice Captains (male and female), and a wider selection of prefects, both male and female, with a range of leadership portfolios.

All Year 11 students will undergo a professional Leadership Training Day designed to help develop and challenge each of the students to be part of the wider College leadership. The elected Prefects and Captains will participate in an ongoing leadership program designed to develop their skills and influence for the benefit of each individual and the wider College Community. All Prefects and Captains will be expected to fulfil College duties in accordance with the College needs and requests. Prefects and Captains will be required to fulfil their duties in accordance with the College ethos and values.

The College House structure comprises of four Houses.

In both Junior School and Senior School, each House has two House Captains (female and male) and four Vice Captains (2 female and 2 male) elected by members of each House.

Student House Captains and Vice Captains are directed by the appointed House Advisor. This will include developing a practical program that develops a plan and team to help support the House Structure across the College.

Towards the conclusion of Year 10, students undergo a comprehensive Student Mentor (Peer Support) training program. This enables students to develop leadership skills and understanding of what is required to lead a small group.

A group of 4-6 students are appointed to the Year 7 Pastoral Care classes as Student Mentors. The selection of these students will be at the discretion of the Student Mentor Trainer in consultation with the Year 7 and 10 Advisors and Year 10 Pastoral Care teachers.

Students are safer when they are taught about their rights to be heard, listened to and
believed.

Thomas Hassall Senior School has students that are members of the College Student Voice. Students of the College are encouraged and supported to contribute to decisions that affect them at the College through their Student Voice members.

Student Voice members are given the opportunity to express their views about the operations of the College, knowing that they will be heard and their opinions are valued.
